A Night in With Audrey Hepburn by Lucy Holliday

While I did not expect this book to be the next literary masterpiece, I will say that I was expecting a little bit more than I got. While some parts were kind of entertaining, the majority of this book was just frustrating. I am going to keep this review as spoiler-free as I can, but just know that I will most likely not be picking up the sequel.

First of all, I had no idea that this book was the first in a series- I thought it was simply a standalone. In this, I was expecting a complete story from beginning to end, but what I got was a lot of loose ends and more questions than I went into the story with. While the hallucination/ghost/split personality of Audrey Hepburn is theorized to be caused by many different things, everyone is just happy to move on and not come up with a concrete reason for her appearance. This is the BIGGEST reason why I left this book so frustrated, and it is the first thing I wanted to get out of the way in this review.

Now let’s talk about characters. Honestly, a lot of them just made me mad in their actions or their lack thereof in certain situations. It seemed like Libby just accepted all of the bad things that were happening to her and didn’t do anything to change it. She stays in a job that she hates for years because she doesn’t know how to do anything else, she accepts a crummy apartment that she didn’t sign up for, and she lets her family walk all over her. AND SHE JUST ACCEPTS THAT THIS IS HER LIFE AND SHE THINKS SHE CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in characters; when they do not work to change anything if they are unhappy with their circumstances and everything good that happens to them is pure luck.

Libby was not the only frustrating character though, her sister was the most irritating character I have ever read about! Such a spoiled brat who bosses everyone around and gets everything she wants by snapping her fingers at the nearest poor unfortunate soul who just happens to be standing there. Her mother is the same, but she enables the sister to be so rude to everyone!

I am also so confused by the romance (?) in this book. I have no idea if I can even call it a romance, but there is at least one guy who has a very confusing type of ‘relationship’ with Libby. I’m not going to give out any spoilers, but I can say that what you expect to happen is exactly what happens and will most likely continue to happen throughout this series.

The only reason why I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 is due to the state of mind I was in when I read it. I was starting my semester so I honestly could not handle anything too intense or that required too much thought. If you are looking for a mindless read… well… I don’t know if I would necessarily recommend this one, but it fits the category.

Overall, a lot of things about this book made me mad. It was a good way to turn my mind off after a long day, but I definitely will not be continuing with the series. 2/5 stars to A Night in With Audrey Hepburn by Lucy Holliday.
