I am so excited to be writing this review! I have been meaning to read Geekerella since it came out almost 4 years ago, and I am so so so happy to have finally read it. I actually listened to this book on audiobook, which actually added so much to the experience. Since this is quite an easy read, having it on audiobook really allowed me to experience the emotions of these characters, which I absolutely credit to the amazing narrators, Eileen Stevens and Tristan Morris. I am going to try to have more in this review than just “you should read this book”, so let’s get going.
As you can probably tell, this story is a retelling of Cinderella, which is one of my favourite tropes! I love fairy tale retellings like The Lunar Chronicles and A Court of Thorns and Roses, but this one has an interesting twist. The book is like CInderella meets Fangirl in that this book was made for any geek or nerd who is obsessed with a book series, movie, tv show, or any other fandom. What’s interesting too is that even though this story revolves around a fictional fandom called Starfield, it does make several references to some very real fandoms such as Harry Potter and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This book does an excellent job of maintaining its own story while still allowing all of us nerds to feel right at home with familiar content.
The characters in this book are all so fully fleshed out too that even if I do not like the character as a person, I do respect how Ashley Poston was able to make each character completely three dimensional. Obviously I love Elle and Darien, but I also really loved Sage and Calliope and their development. It would have been so easy to make both Sage and Calliope very minor secondary characters, but I really do appreciate how the author took the time and energy to make both of these girls an important part of the story.
One thing that I always criticize in my reviews is the pacing of the book, but I honestly thought that the pacing in this novel was perfect. I am a fan of faster pacing in books, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that is exactly what I got from this book. We never spent more time than necessary in a scene or stuck in a particular problem, and I think that switching between 2 narrators really helped add to this concept.
Overall, I fell in love with this book from the first chapter. Funny, quirky and romantic, Geekerella is the ideal book for anyone who has ever been obsessed with a fictional world. It highlights the power of fandom and how some stories are more than just stories, and makes geeks feel less alone. 5/5 stars to Geekerella by Ashley Poston
