Meternity by Meghann Foye

Before I saw this book at the library, I had never heard of it or Meghann Foye, but now you can call me a fan. This book was just so much fun to read and I really looked forward to the time I was able to listen to my audiobook every day to just get lost in this absolutely absurd story about a woman faking a pregnancy. Let me just start by saying that I do not condone the actions that Liz chooses to take, and I know that faking a pregnancy is highly insensitive, but I am taking this story for what it is: a purely fictional story. I completely understand that this book is problematic in some aspects, but I will be reviewing this book based purely on the characters, storyline and general enjoyment of the book.
Let’s start with the plot which, as I mentioned, is extremely problematic and honestly made me anxious a lot of the time. Being in Liz’s situation would make me panic every day of my life that someone was going to find me out and fire me and ruin my life. I just do not understand the benefits that Liz is gaining from pretending to be pregnant; I honestly believe that she could have had everything she ended up with without faking a pregnancy. That being said, it was still a fun, albeit stressful, ride to take with these characters.
I don’t think there was one decent person in this entire story, but somehow I was still always entertained with their antics. Liz is so problematic, but at the same time is also super quirky and adorable and just entertaining to read about. Big gaping lie aside, she really does seem like a normal, single, childless woman in today’s day and age, feeling pressured, judged and ostracized by society. The reality is, women at a certain age without children are judged, and Liz is the perfect embodiment. Ryan seems like a decent guy but tended to get irrationally mad at Liz for every little inconvenience when he was far from perfect. Her coworkers all need a reality check, and her friends seem vaguely superficial. There really isn’t much else to say about these characters other than that despite all of their problems, they are quite entertaining.
I’m not sure there is much else to say about this book. It’s fluffy, light, and kind of ridiculous, and there really isn’t much to analyze. Again, I realize that this is a problematic story line, but for what it was, I kind of enjoyed it. Overall, 3/5 stars to Meternity by Meghann Foye.
